Squarespace vs Wix: Which Website Platform Is Right for Your Business?

If you’re building a website for your therapy, coaching, or service-based business, you may be deciding between two of the most popular platforms: Squarespace or Wix.

Both allow you to create a do-it-yourself website without coding - but they’re designed with slightly different priorities in mind.

Understanding how they compare can help you choose the platform that best supports your business now and as it grows.

Design & Visual Style

Squarespace is often known for:

  • clean templates

  • cohesive layouts

  • strong typography

  • minimal design

Many service providers choose Squarespace because its templates are created with visual consistency in mind and it’s very user friendly.

Wix, on the other hand, offers:

  • more layout flexibility

  • drag-and-drop customization

  • a larger variety of template styles

This can be helpful if you want more creative control - but it also requires more effort to maintain a polished, cohesive look. Wix is definitely not as user friendly or intuitive as Squarespace and requires more effort for a cohesive polished look if you are doing your website yourself. It also requires you to pay special attention to the mobile side of things as Wix offers full control over the mobile version, which is great, but that also means that there is more that can go wrong on that side of your website.

Ease of Use

Both platforms are beginner-friendly, but the editing experience is different.

Squarespace uses a:

✔ structured section-based editor - which helps maintain alignment and spacing automatically.

Wix uses a:

✔ freeform drag-and-drop editor - which allows for more flexibility — but will require additional adjustments across desktop and mobile views.

Personally, I really appreciate Wix’s customization options and I love building websites on Wix, but if I am in the mood for simplicity and cohesion I often find myself gravitating towards Squarespace’s more guided layout system. For people who want to build their website on their own, or manage their own updates after a professional build, I often recommend Squarespace for its ease of use and intuitive builder.

Features for Service-Based Businesses and therapists

If you offer services such as therapy, coaching, or consulting, you may want your website to support:

  • booking or scheduling

  • contact forms

  • blog content

  • gated resources

  • or email list building

Squarespace includes:

✔ blogging
✔ scheduling integrations (Acuity)
✔ basic email marketing tools
✔ membership options and online courses

Wix includes:

✔ appointment booking (Wix hosted)
✔ marketing automations
✔ email tools (that are more advanced but not as pretty)
✔ blogging
✔ and a larger app marketplace

Both platforms can support service-based businesses, though their tools are structured differently.

Scalability

As your business grows, your website may need to support:

  • additional services

  • new offers

  • online courses

  • digital resources

Wix’s app ecosystem allows you to expand functionality over time in a BIG way but you will need support as most of their tools really do require a professional eye who can setup the backend so its fully functional.

Squarespace tends to offer more built-in features — with fewer external integrations.

Depending on your needs, you may prefer:

  • Wix’s flexibility and larger ability to scale

  • or Squarespace’s streamlined approach with fewer options to scale but a simplicity that is very supportive especially for therapists.

SEO Considerations

Both Squarespace and Wix include:

✔ customizable page titles
✔ meta descriptions
✔ mobile responsiveness
✔ SSL security

However, they differ in how much control users have over certain SEO settings.

However, with the introduction of AI your ability to rank in search results often depends more on:

  • page structure

  • content clarity

  • and keyword targeting

So Which One Should You Choose?

Squarespace may be a good fit if you:

✔ want a visually cohesive site
✔ prefer structured layouts
✔ value simplicity
✔ offer services

I usually recommend Squarespace for therapists as it includes all the tools therapists need to grow their business while remaining simple and easy to edit.

Wix may be a good fit if you:

✔ want more customization
✔ plan to use integrations
✔ are comfortable managing layout details
✔ anticipate adding advanced features

I generally recommend Wix for service based businesses who plan to scale within a year or two or coaches who plan to put their courses on Kajabi or similiar platform.

The Platform Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle

While choosing the right platform is important, your website’s ability to show up on Google and convert depends on:

  • messaging clarity

  • structure

  • navigation

  • and calls-to-action

Even the best platform can struggle to convert visitors without intentional setup.
